The other half of our class had their turn for Show and Tell on Thursday. Students brought their favorite books and told their peers why they liked their books so much.
Have a good weekend.

In math this week we talked about patterns with plane and solid shapes. We learned that patterns change according to size, shape and color. We also learned that shapes can be classified according to these attributes. In Science students talked about what materials objects are made from and learned that making materials into something requires a sequence of steps. We will use these sequencing words for a writing task next week. Students really enjoyed watching a short video of how a simple pencil is made. For students who would like to see how more things are made the series How It's Made is very interesting. The other half of our class had their turn for Show and Tell on Thursday. Students brought their favorite books and told their peers why they liked their books so much. During reading I have done reading assessments with half the class and will continue with the other half next week.
Have a good weekend.

This week in Science students got to put the design process into action again! Children first planned what they would build and then choose the materials they would use to make a marble run, a maze or some other kind of construction. Children could work solo or in small groups. At the end of the construction time children came together to demonstrate how their creation worked. They talked about the materials they used and problems they had and how they could improve their designs. In math students worked in table groups to play geometry games and build models with plane and solid shapes. In ELA students read with their reading buddies and used post it notes to record funny, sad, surprising or confusing parts in their stories and then reported back to the group. We had our first Show and Tell with half the students bringing their favourite story books. Each student talked about their book explaining why it was their favorite and who gave it to them. Grade 1a did so well with the Read-a-thon. I was very proud of their determination! As a class we read over 2800 minutes!!!!! Thank you so very much for your support of this event and for your generous donations. I will announce the total on Monday when I have all the reading logs back.
We started our read-a-thon today! We collected 153 minutes as a class. Please make sure your child brings their reading log every day so we can add their minutes.
This week reading buddies practiced reading in pairs. One person read first while the other listened. Then the listener had to retell the story to their partner. In science we followed the design process to make a protective covering/container for an egg drop experiment. Each table first talked together and drew a plan of their intended design. Then each group used different materials to build their design. The next day came the fun part - testing their design to see if it did indeed stop the egg from breaking. After testing children recorded their data and talked about how to improve their designs by choosing better materials such as egg cartons to build their "egg nest". In writing students edited their writing before publishing the final copies to be put up on the wall for everyone to read. In Math we took the learning outside and did a Shape Scavenger Hunt to see how many shapes we could see in the world around us. We found all the shapes on our list, even the heart!
One of the things we are working on this term is working together as a team or playing learning games in small groups. During park time some children have been involved in group games or building things together. During Math time this week children have played subtraction games in their table groups and rotated through 4 games, remembering to follow the rules of the game and to leave the game ready for the new group to start on. In Math we also finished our chapter on subtraction. We reviewed the chapter , did a chapter test and a four chapter assessment. We found out together an area we need to work on and further review and thus that we can learn from our mistakes.
Our writing topic this week was inspired by our visit to Miraikan and our new Science Unit Technology All Around Us. During a feedback discussion about what children were most excited about at the museum we found that most children liked Asimo the robot. This got them thinking about their future with robots and what they might be like. During science class when we talked about different kind of engineers it was robotics engineers that caught the students' attention. Everyone was excited to start on the writing topic thinking about what their robot would look like and how it would help them. Over two days we worked through the writing process to brainstorm, plan, draft, revise, edit, publish and illustrate a piece about robots the children had created. Each child presented their ideas to the class. |
