We were back to a normal schedule this week and we got a lot of work done! We started to get ready for our upcoming PTC's next Friday and we talked a lot about our goals for the year and the term. The students will be presenting their goals to you during their PTC's!
We took advantage of the weather and spent a lot of time outside as well this week. We even had whole grade park time on Friday at Shoto park (now forever known as Shota park) which we are hoping to make a weekly activity!
On Monday we also had our first fire drill! I am glad to say that all students conducted themselves wonderfully and we were able to evacuate quickly! Well done G1B!
Mathematics.
We also covered 2 strategies to solve subtraction problems. We looked at counting back on a number line (the opposite of counting on) but we also looked at how we can use counting on to solve subtraction. For example:
7 -3 =
We know that 7 is the whole number (the end number on a number line.) So we can start on 3 and count how many jumps it takes us to get to 7.
3 to 4, 5, 6, 7 (4 jumps)
Therefore 7 - 3 = 4.
Tricky!
Writing.
We also wrote our goals for year during writing time this week. Students reflected on their favourite subjects and areas they would like to improve on. The also completed a sheet which completed these sentences:
- I am really good at ___________
- I want to be better at ____________
- I want to learn about _____________
These forms will be shared during our PTCs on Friday.
Reading.
Social Studies.
- They help us get along.
- They help us be safe.
- They help us be fair.
- They help us learn.
We then looked at our own rules and debated which of the categories they fell into. Lastly we looked at who creates these rules and the process of voting. This inevitably took the turn of talking about the upcoming U.S. elections and how representative voting is carried out. We also talked about how making sure that we choose the right leaders when we vote is very important.
