___ - 5 = 4
The first thing the students will need to do is write a number bond. We know that the first number in subtraction has to be the whole number, therefore the 5 and the 4 are parts of that number. We also know that if we add the parts together, we will get the whole number! So:
5 + 4 = 9
Then,
9 - 5 = 4!
This was VERY tricky for the students to get their heads around and we spent most of the week practicing it! We are going to have our assessment next week and I'm sure they'll be throwing a few of those questions our way.
