We did manage to get to the park a few times this week but as the weather is getting colder I would like to ask that all students must come to school with a jacket (or jumper/sweater). We want to try and keep as warm as possible!
Mathematics.
We also had a look at patterns using shapes. This was much like our previous work with number patterns, with students looking for the repeating pattern or rule and continuing the pattern following that rule.
I am hoping to have the assessment results up onto SeeSaw soon for everyone to have a look at. I recommend looking at the last question, it was a nasty one!
Writing.
I went to Disneyland (Draft sentence.)
I went to Disneyland on my birthday. I was excited.
This helps the students take one step at a time and allows them to organise their thoughts more effectively.
We also introduced some aspects from the writing workshop that I learned about in my professional development day. I am trying to spend more time with the students when they are writing to help them with 'little goals' to make the writing process less overwhelming. The students have been very receptive to this and very respectful to each other when other students are meeting with me!
Reading.
Character: A character is a person, animal, or creature in a story.
Setting: A setting is where and when a story takes place.
Plot: The plot is what happens in the story.
Problem: The problem is the trouble the character faces.
Solution: The solution is how the problem is solved.
In our reading partners we looked at all 5 of the elements before spending a bit of time with, 'No David!' by David Shannon to look at character and some Charlie and Lola books to look at plot (and retelling.) This reading unit ties into our upcoming unit on creative writing next term, so I am interested to see how much the students retain!
Science.
How can we make the sound louder/softer?
The students found that the harder you hit the tubes, the louder the sound was (although we couldn't hit them that hard because the tubes would fly off the foam bed they were lying in.) The opposite proved true for making softer sounds too.
On Thursday we looked at the different kinds on instruments (stringed and percussion) and how we could make them loud or soft. The students even had a try of my electric guitar to see how they could make the strings vibrate and how they could change the sound!
