Our Mystery Reader this week was Hudson's grandmother who was visiting from America. She read the story What the Ladybug Heard which everyone enjoyed. Thank you for sharing a story with us.
Spelling - the weekly words were long u words that used bossy e and ew words. Next week we will not have spelling words but will review some hunks and chunks.
Grammar - this week we reviewed pronouns and practiced making sentences first with a noun and following it with another related sentence using a pronoun to replace the noun in the first sentence.
Reading - Students continued to read and learn from non fiction texts this week. Students worked with a pair to pull information together from a few pages and make new headings to direct the readers attention to the topic of several pages. Partners helped each other remember the important information from their books by asking questions. Students used all the skills they have learnt about text features to locate information in their Science textbooks (another non fiction book) and take away the main points from the chapter on plants.
Writing - Students finished writing their final copies of their animal reports. They also coloured and labelled a small diagram of their animal.
This week we did one and two digit addition without regrouping (when ones are 9 or less) and with regrouping (when ones are 10 or more). This was a new concept for many so we will continue with addition and regrouping on Monday and Tuesday next week. Students need to work on adding the numbers in the ones column first and then the numbers in the tens column. Knowing basic addition facts and addition strategies are very important at this stage. If you can support you child at home with simple addition facts would be beneficial.
Students finished up their animal projects by labelling a diagram and making a model from clay of their animal.
The focus question was - What causes sound? Students worked in groups using cups with rubber bands and wooden craft sticks to explore how sound is produced. We made a table fiddle using string and wooden blocks. Students recorded and shared what they observed when we plucked the string. Students made a smaller version of a table fiddle called a book fiddle. Students found that the longer parts of the band or string made lower sounds and shorter pieces of string or rubber band made higher sounds. At the end of the investigation, we learned that sound always comes from a sound source which are objects that are vibrating. The back and forth motion of vibrating objects always make sound. We can stop sound if we stop the vibrations.
We read and discussed how national holidays came about. These are holidays that celebrate special events or heroes in the past.
We ended the week with a joint birthday celebration for April birthday girls Harlow and Kanna. Everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon snack of fruit, juice and cupcakes. Happy Birthday Harlow!
