Curriculum Outline for Term 1
Math G1A and G1B
This term we will complete 7 math units. They are as follows;
1. Numbers to 10 – count from one to ten and recognize number words to ten. Use ten frames and counters to represent numbers. Compare and contrast sets of objects using one to one correspondence. Make number patterns.
2. Number Bonds - making bonds with connecting cubes and math balance.
3. Addition Facts to 10 – ways to add, making addition stories, and real world problems.
4. Subtraction Facts to 10 - ways to subtract, making subtraction stories and real world subtraction problems.
5. Shapes and Patterns – exploring plane shapes, exploring solid shapes, making pictures and models with shapes, seeing shapes around us, making patterns with plane and solid shapes.
6. Ordinal Numbers and Position – use ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd), position words ( after, between, next to, under, above, below, behind, in front of)
7. Numbers to 20 – counting to 20, read and write numbers to 20, use place value charts, compare numbers, number patterns.
Science for G1A and G1B
This term we will look at 4 Units in Science. They will be;
Unit 1 How Scientists Work – using five senses and using tools to gather information and answer inquiry questions.
Unit 2 Technology All Around – how do engineers work? What are the materials that make up objects and how can we sort them?
Unit 3 Animals – life cycles, birth, growth, reproduction and death.
Unit 4 Earth’s Resources – rocks, soil, water and saving Earth’s precious resources.
Social Studies G1A and G1B
This term will look at two Units in Social Studies. They are;
Unit 1 – My School, My Community – talking about how people cooperate and work together. Being a good citizen at school.
Unit 2 – Working in the Community – looking at needs and wants and the kinds of work people do that helps them get what they need and want.
Reading for G1A and G1B
This term we will focus on three units including;
Unit 1 Readers Build Good Habits – establishing rules and expectations for reading to self, being independent learners in partner settings and working to become stronger readers.
Unit 2 Tackling Trouble – build skills to think about stories and how words will go before we read, use of letters, sounds, patterns and snap words to help with reading, check and fix mistakes and helping each other read.
Poetry - each week children will learn a new poem and later in the year write their own poems.
Writing for G1A and G1B
This term we will introduce students to the five steps in the Writing Process – prewrite, write, revise, edit and publish.
We will also look at understanding writing traits such as ideas, organization, voice,word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. Children will learn about writing sentences and paragraphs before starting on a unit of descriptive writing.
Spelling and Grammar for G1A and G1B
Students will receive spelling words to study at home from the Spelling and Vocabulary Workbook. We are also including first 100 Fry Words to help build reading vocabulary.
We will introduce and review beginning and final consonants, short vowels, consonant blends and long vowel sounds.
Students will learn ABC order, capitalization, sentence word order, adjectives, action verbs and pronouns.
