Mathematics.
2 + 6 = (is the same as) 6 + 2 = (is the same as) 8
This lead into our first addition strategy the students looked at which is, 'counting on.' The students learned how to use a number line to solve single digit addition by starting from the larger addend (6 in the above example) and counting '2 more' in jumps on a number line. This is a basic strategy but is the first step to helping children reduce dependency on their fingers (we only have 10!)
Writing.
PREWRITING: Students chose a, 'special day' they wanted to write about. They chose topics that interested them and they had a lot of knowledge about. This helped them think of 4 pictures that described the where, who and what of the special day.
DRAFT: Students then put the pictures into sentences using the now famous, 'Ms. Allison's writing hamburger.' The students put the sentences in order but did not need to worry about spelling or punctuation at this moment. The sentences had to make sense though!
REVISE: Using the simple sentences the students wrote before, students thought of additional information that they could add into their writing.
We will continue our work with the writing process next week and I am hoping that we will have a completed work sample by the week after!
Reading.
We also started our first foray's into partner reading this week by learning the 5 different ways of reading to our partners as well as how to RETELL the story to our partners afterwards. We looked at recommending books that we read as well as giving us the best chance of reading for longer by making good reading choices (choosing a good place to sit, choosing interesting books etc.)
