International Children's Day!
Mathematics.
Jessica has 4 red pencils and 3 green pencils. How many does she have altogether?
1. Students find the numbers that they need to use. 4,3 in this case.
2. Students figure out what they need to do, addition or subtraction then solve the problem.
4 + 3 = 7
3. Students would then write the answer in a sentence.
Jessica has 7 pencils in all.
We also tackled subtraction this week using both physical objects (which we called Noa's way) and counting back using a hundreds chart (which we called Marie's way.) We concentrated on the benefits and disadvantages of both but I would recommend you ask the students which one they prefer to use!
Writing.
Later we looked at how we could take a big moment (a watermelon) and focus in on it until we get to the small moment (the seeds.) For example:
I went to Disneyland (Big idea Watermelon)
I went to Disneyland with my family. (Small idea Slice)
I went on Space Mountain with my Sister (Small moment The seed.)
This week the students have completed at least one of their small moments and have started to brainstorm some more based on this watermelon idea!
Reading.
We also looked at what we need to do when we finish our books in reading time. I have now banned the phrase, 'I've finished' in class as the students can be doing several other activities when they finish reading their books. The three that the students learned this week were:
- Reread the book again.
- Reread your favourite part.
- Retell the story to yourself (highly recommended practice for our reading assessments!)
Social Studies.
Later in the week we looked at why we have rules at school and tied them to our classroom agreements of 'We are caring, respectful, responsible and safe.'
