Mathematics.
At the end of the week we looked at fact families. We used our number bonds to create 4 different number sentences to show how all three numbers are related. For example, 4 ,5 and 9 could be:
5 + 4 = 9
4 + 5 = 9 ( a big well done to Jessica for spotting the commutative property!)
9 - 5 = 4
9 - 4 = 5
The students then took their first steps into algebra by finding the missing integer in number sentences. For example:
X + 4 = 9
From our fact families we know that 4 is the part and 9 is the whole number. Therefore if we change it to a subtraction sentence, we can find the missing number!
9 - 4 = 5!
This was a little tricky for students so we will be practicing this before our summative assessment next week!
Writing.
We have found keeping our stories small moments very difficult, so we spent some time on focussing on times we felt a strong emotion like anger, suprise, sadness, fear. These emotions, although negative, do not last for a long time and make for great small moment stories! Here's one I told the students about the time I was suprised. I'll leave it up to them to let you know what happened.
Reading.
- Chrysanthemum has chrysanthemums on her blanket when she was a baby.
- She hold her head when she is sad or stressed.
- Her father reads book on raising children when he doesn't know what to do!
- Kevin Henkes drew a lot of flowers in the background of the book.
The students also completed a self assessment on Wednesday based on our 'Reader's build good habits' unit. They were asked if they felt they took sneak peeks at their readers, checked inside the books and read the back BEFORE they started reading. They were also asked if they were using skills such as rereading for smoothness or 'scooping up words' as they read. I will be looking at these assessments and listening to the kids read in the coming weeks!
Social Studies.
- What do you do for your job?
- How do you help other people?
These questions will form the base of an assessment that the students will prepare next week!
