Mathematics.
What is the date one week after the last day of the month?
This was really tricky as the students had to cross over months. We used a calendar to visualise where the date was, how many days were in a week and used that to count on! The other question that caused problems was:
This is the time (10:30pm), It is one hour after Josh went to bed. What time did he go to bed.
This one was nasty because it gave students a picture of an analogue clock with the time and the students selected 10:30 as the answer without reading the rest of the question! We talked about how 9:30 was the answer and the importance of reading the while question in assessments.
On Thursday and Friday we reviewed our addition strategies that we worked on earlier in the term. This is in preparation for our unit on addition and subtraction to 40 next term!
Writing.
Reading.
- Table of contents.
- Indexes.
- Diagrams.
- Keywords.
You may have students asking to see more non fiction books at home or looking for these properties. They were very keen to use the class atlases on Wednesday for example!
Science.
- We can push air into different containers and it will inflate them.
- We cannot depress the plunger on a syringe if the air cannot escape.
-If we transfer air to an empty syringe, it will push whatever is in the way up (the plunger in this case.)
- If too much air is pushed into a container, it will try to escape! (The top of the plunger pops off! To everyone's amusement.......)
