Mathematics.
2 2
+1 2
First we would add up the numbers in the ones column (2 + 2 = 4) and write it below. Then students would add up the tens column and write that number:
2 2
+ 1 2
______
3 4
We also practice addition with regrouping where the ones will add up to more than ten. This means we would have to regroup the ten into the tens column.
2 5
+2 8
_____
5 + 8 is 13. We would write the 3 in the ones column and add the ten to the ten column.
1
2 5
+2 8
_____
5 3
We did a lot of practice with this and we will be reviewing it when we come back from spring break.
Writing.
Reading.
- Photos with captions (to tell us what the photo or groups of photos are about.)
- Labels (for telling us the parts being described in a photo or illustration.)
- Glossaries (found at the back of a book to tell us what the keywords mean.)
We played a game with our class atlases on Thursday where students had to find the capital city of a country (and where it was on a map) using the index, looked the page up and found the capital in bold (like keywords!) We also found that the countries in our atlases were in alphabetical order, which helped us find what we wanted to learn even faster!
Science.
- 1 clear vial or cup.
- A container of water big enough to fully submerge the cup (transparent is better though!)
- A piece of kitchen paper (or paper towel.)
- A small ball that can float (a ping pong ball should suffice.)
Be sure to ask the students how they are able to do these 'tricks' and have fun!
