A reminder for next week that the 20th, 21st and 22nd of January, students will be able to recite a poem (WITHOUT reading them) for the opportunity to get a raffle ticket. These will be put into a draw for some wonderful prizes on the 29th (last year there was an air hockey table!) Students will need to remember a specific type of poem each day (the first day is a rhyming poem) and they will have the opportunity to win a total of 3 raffle tickets in total. I informed the students of the competition on Friday and they seem very excited!
Mathematics.
The Victor method (AKA Making 10s)
In this method, students break up a number to make a ten and then add the remainder as 10 + X is a lot easier than juggling ones in your head (or using fingers.) For example:
8 + 6 = ___
We know that 8 + 2 is ten is if we break the 6 into 2 and 4, we can make a 10 easily.
8 + 2 = 4 =
Then we add them up!
10 + 4 = 14.
The Sofia method (AKA Doubles +1)
We found out that Sofia is very good at using doubles to solve problems so we practices memorising our doubles facts then identifying sums that we can use them to solve. The problems have to have a difference of 1 to work though! For example:
8 + 7 (the difference between 8 and 7 is 1) = __
We know that 8 is 7 + 1 so we can make a double and plus 1!
1 + 7 + 7 = __
We know that double 7 is 14 so all we need to do is add 1.
14 + 1 = 15.
Next week we will continue work with these and perhaps start on some subtraction ones too!
Writing.
Pete the Cat
By G1B
Pete is smart,
He has heart,
He has a guitar,
It has a star.
Pete is cool,
He is no fool.
Alright.
We also touched on using MUSIC to our songs. Grade 1 will be trying to compose some poetry for the Blues! We will be working with Ms. Erin to help us make some new songs we can perform for our poetry slam!
Reading.
"I have a big bogie", said (insert students' name here).
We changed the word said to other verbs and had to speak the sentence as they instructed. For example:
"I have a big bogie", explained (insert students' name here).
"I have a big bogie", shouted (insert students' name here).
"I have a big bogie", whispered (insert students' name here).
"I have a big bogie", cried (insert students' name here).
We also talked about how this showed us how the character was feeling when they said this sentence. I am hoping the students will be able to start incorporating some of these words into their writing as well!
Science.
Opaque: The material blocks all light.
Translucent: The material lets some light through.
Transparent: Light is able to pass through the material.
The students were careful not to name the objects that they were investigating but rather what they were made of. We had the example of a cup can be a all of those words depending what they are made of! For example:
A porcelain cup is opaque.
A paper cup is translucent.
A plastic cup is transparent.
We also had a quick quiz at the end of the week wrapping up all our work with shadows!
