It's was a valentines week for G1B this week. The students made valentine's card for each other, dressed up in red/pink or white and brought in a stuffed animal (had to be a real one though!) to support the charity, 'Friends of animals.' This charity helps domestic and wild animals in need of rehabilitation or rehoming all over the world! Apart from valentine's day, we had a full week of classes and managed to get through a lot of work! We continued our work on numbers to 40 this week. We looked at different way we can write numbers based on their physical objects, place value and number sentences. The students had to show the number in these three ways to help them understand how a number is constructed and what they actually mean (as opposed to just remembering a sequence of numbers by rote.) We then practiced how to count larger numbers by helping Ms. D and the student council find out how many 1 yen coins were in our donation buckets (374!) We also touched upon the 'greater than' and 'less than' symbols again and have been playing quite a lot of maths games in the beginning of lessons based on ordering numbers and place value. I recommend asking the students about our place value game (you'll need a deck of cards to play!) This was the last week for the students to finish their descriptive writing. We spent a bit of the week looking at dictionary skills to help with their editing (fixing their mistakes.) As this is their summative assessment, I was not helping them identify which words we spelled incorrectly but I was happy to see that most students were able to seek help or find mistakes in their work. One exception was the word, 'jiggly' as it was not in the dictionary! The students also practiced their handwriting and formatting for their publishing later on. I am hoping to have their work up on weebly as soon as I have finished marking them! This week in reading we have been have our preliminary assessments for this term. Students have been either in reading groups or reading independently while these have been assigned. As these assessments are done on the ipads, students are able to complete them independently, which has allowed me to have more one to one reading time with the students. I am pleased to see that students are showing good progress in their reading but it seems that reading comprehension may need to be addressed in future lessons. I would also like to reminded parents that students are expected to read for 10 minutes at least every night (not just one book a night!) If they do finish their texts quickly, they can chose another to read on Raz kids to make up the time. Of course, if they are reading for longer the better! We continued to look at maps this week and the students learned to draw maps in particular. We reviewed the 4 different elements that a map has to have (a title, legend or map key, symbols and a compass rose.) We looked at how we could use a compass to tell the direction on a map and then the students set off making one of our classroom! We found that getting the map orientation was the hardest part as well as the proper scale of our desks! On Tuesday and Thursday we followed a set of directions to make a town map from scratch and the final map will be part of our assessment for this unit! There was no prize draw on Friday as I was sick :(. We will have our prize draw on Monday instead.
