Mathematics.
We also started to look at number patterns again and students recalled that the first step to solving these questions was to find the rule. Once they found that, they could figure out the missing number. I couldn't just leave it there though, so the students also looked at how to solve patterns when the numbers were not next to each other! For example:
23, __ , 27, __ , 31
Oh noes! To solve these problems, all students used their hundreds chart and tried trial and error to see which rule would work in this pattern (in this case 2's.) Nasty!
Writing.
Princess Cheese decided to trap the giant, so she dug a big hole with a shovel. Then she covered the hole with a slice of cheese and put the giants favourite cheese (blue cheese) on top.
The giant came to get the cheese and fell into the hole!
Princess Cheese rebuilt Cheesetown on top of the hole so the giant couldn't get out again.
The End.
Reading.
cupboard (chunky monkey, split the word up into smaller words.)
newspaper (chunky monkey again but using flippy dolphin to change the vowel sound for a for paper.)
confusion (lips the fish and stretchy snake to stretch the sounds out.)
We also looked at what word COULD work in the sentence. We asked, 'Does that make sense?' and took clues from pictures if we needed. We also spent time looking for pictures that are false friends, ones that do not show what is happening exactly in the text but are adding more details. This can lead students to over rely on them and 'assume' wrong words in the sentences based on what the picture shows.
We also had time for some reader's theatre this week! We managed to have one or two groups perform some of our favourite Elephant and Piggie books. I have been recording them on our ipad and I may even get them uploaded to Weebly (internet gods allowing.)
