Mathematics.
Risako's birthday is on the 11th of December, Kelan's birthday is on the 6th of January. How many days between them.
We had a lot of students fall into the trap of using subtraction for the dates straight away: 11 - 6 = 5!
We can either count the days by hand using a calendar (the most popular option) or we can use some tricky maths! First we can find how many days until the end of the month:
31 - 11 = 20.
Then we can add the 20 to the 6 days in January that we need to count on and we'll find the answer: 26 days!
We also looked at remembering the number of days in the months. We learned a song that was taught to me when I was young (when dinosaurs roamed the earth.) Here it is if the students want to practice at home.
Writing.
- wandering margins (to make it look like I've written more.)
- V E R Y L A R G E L E T T E R S. (Same as above.)
- really small letters. (because 'grown ups' write small.)
- nospacesbetweenwords (makes our sentences seem like they have more information.)
- Blunt pencil (leaves black smudges everywhere to distract from the writing.)
Next week we will also try to start our summative assessments and creating new characters and stories!
Reading.
Social Studies.
Family Groups: Mums, dads, brothers, sisters etc.
School groups: Classes, grades, clubs etc.
Community groups: Sports clubs, community centers.
Although we found that we belonged to a lot of different groups and our groups may be different to others, we can still belong to the same groups and interact with people from all groups.
