The students were very disappointed we could not go to the field trip on Tuesday this week but we will be rescheduling for next Tuesday instead! We will be going to the zoo and bug hunting for Ms Allison's awesome terrarium. This week we lost some park time due to the weather but have recently been spending a lot more time at Tomigaya park as the students only take 5 minutes to walk there (as opposed to 12 at the beginning of term). Lots of mosquitoes though so we always put a lot of bug spray on. We started our new unit on addition and subtraction to 120 this week. Most of the students have already started working at this level due to our weekly maths tests so it hasn't been much of a jump for them to the larger numbers. This week we reviewed some of the mental maths strategies for addition, particularly adding the ones (46 + 3 = 40 + 6 + 3 = 49) and adding tens (29 + 40 = 20 + 40 + 9 = 69.) We then moved to regrouping and identifying which problems require us to use it. We also moved to a much harder version of our money activity where the students have to figure out the change. I have been stressing that the students, 'find the difference' (i.e. subtraction) as some have been confused as to what to do. We will continue this activity for the remainder of the term. We were finishing up our reports this week and most students have been able to complete their reports. Some students managed to finish really quickly and moved onto making realistic models of their animals with paper clay! I'm hoping to clear sometime next week for everyone to have a turn making models and finishing up their work. We also worked on our spelling this week as part of our writing lessons and reviewed some of the hunks and chunks that have been causing problems. Next week we will have a quick mini unit on responses to literature, giving us a chance to write about our favourite books! We continued to look at connections between texts this week and we focussed on vocabulary. First we looked at making word banks for unknown word in our non fiction books and comparing texts based on how the information is portrayed (illustrations/photographs, whether or not they have indexes, glossaries etcs.) We spent Thursday looking at our favourite write Roald Dahl and how to interpret some of his made up words like we read in the BFG. We looked at how we could read all of the sentence and try to figure out what it means. We also looked at breaking the word up and looking at what other words we think it could mean ('slubber' sounds like blubber and has words like 'oily' 'slimey' around it for example.) For social studies this week we finished off our family booklets with 'What activities do families do together'. On Thursday we worked on, 'What do families need?' We looked at the difference between needs and wants. We looked at 3 needs for families: Shelter, Clothing and Food. This lead into the students planning a camping trip and choosing what things to bring to address each of the needs. This week Sumiaki took home the prize draw this week and chose to change his seat (a very popular choice!) Lyla took home the Ms Lindsey prize and got a pack of serving forks for her bento box! Well done to both of them!
