Spelling - our words this week focused on long o words using o-e. oa and ow. Children also worked in their Spelling groups on word sorts targeting different vowel sounds and chunks in words.
Grammar - We reviewed parts of a sentence this week. Children know that Nouns are used for people, places and things, adjectives are words to describe things and verbs are action/doing verbs.
Social Studies
We looked at continents and oceans of the world using our class world map and a labelling activity. During discussion I learned that children are interested in exploring such land forms as volcanoes and also natural disasters. We will follow up on this next week. Being good citizens we went on Eco Patrol around the campus this week. This ties in nicely with our social studies lesson about taking care of our environment.
Science - We wrapped up our unit Objects in the Sky with a wonderful phenomenon. The moon gave us a real show on the last day of January and the second last day of our space unit. Everyone was excited to see and learn about the "super blue blood moon". Thursday finished with making moon phase viewers and a sharing of photos and knowledge of the moon and moon observations. Alexis' mother provided us with beautiful photos of the many phases of the moon as it waxed and became the magnificent moon we saw on Wednesday night. Taito also brought in photos of the blood moon to share with us. Mischa shared her space book and we read Papa Please Get Me the Moon from Maya. Students showed a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity during this unit and could experience a once in a life time event.
