Spelling - our weekly word focus was words with a long e sound (e, ee, ea). Students also worked in their spelling groups to complete word sorts focusing on vowel teams or word endings. We are encouraging children to work in small groups and talk with their friends to discuss and work out new words and how they should be sorted.
Reading - On Monday students reviewed what they had learnt last week about characters by completing a character profile. They also learnt to use what they already know about characters to predict what will happen next in the story.
Mystery Reader - the Mystery Reader this week was Emily's dad. He read What comes next? and Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, two funny stories that had the children laughing. Thank you to Emily's dad. Next week we will have a break and then get back to our next reader. There are still a few openings so please come and read to G1. The students are really enjoying all the different books and reading styles.
We finished our unit on subtraction and addition to 20. Students have been working on strategies for addition and strategies that move on from counting on their fingers. We will revisit these strategies with larger numbers twice again before the end of the term. Knowing doubles facts will be especially useful as will addition and subtraction facts to 10. Keep reviewing these at home if your child needs support. Students worked in groups and pairs on problem solving and did an end of unit test on Friday.
We are nearing the end of our current unit "What is the world like?" so children worded with a partner to practice providing supporting details to a main idea and thus making a summary paragraph for each of the main ideas we have learnt in Social Studies so far. Students wrote and presented their ideas to the class. Next week students will be graphing how they travel to school and other places and how they keep in contact with family and friends around the world.
This week we have been doing a weather watch inquiry. Each morning students have observed and recorded the weather using weather symbols. On Friday they used the data they gathered to make a prediction about what the weather on the 6th day would be like. Students learnt that weather forecasters use these patterns and various equipment to forecast our weather. We will continue to observe the weather throughout the term to see the changes in temperature and weather as we move into Spring. Next week we will make a link between weather and animals and move on to learn about animals.
It was Group B's turn to share their favourite book characters during Show and Tell on Friday.
We had quite a few notes in our kindness box this week. Noted for their kind deeds this week were Cocona, Morgan, Hudson, Alexis and William. Well done to these students and also to those who noticed the acts of kindness.
LETTER TO MS. CARLA and MR. ROGER
Thank you to everyone for turning in their letters. Mr. Adam came back to school today and collected the letters to pass on to Ms. Carla and Mr. Roger. Teachers talked about continuing to encourage good manners and respect among our students at today's teachers' meeting. Please share your expectations with your children too.
Have an enjoyable long weekend. See everyone back at school on Wed. 14th.
