In ELA we reviewed the short a and short i sound and practiced word the 'am' and 'it' word families. Many children wrote more than 5 sentences for their homework to practice their spelling words. This is also a great opportunity to strengthen writing skills.
In writing this week we looked at the Writing Process which is a series of steps (prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish and illustrate) that will allow children to produce various different types of writing throughout the year. We combined reading and writing task. One of the ways we can read is retelling a familiar story. We used the story The Three Little Pigs to demonstrate this skill. Everyone joined in a brainstorming and planning activity drawing a cluster to organise their ideas. Children used this rough outline to first retell the story in their own words and then worked hard to put the story down on paper. Children were reminded to focus on getting their ideas down rather than worrying about making mistakes. Erasers are not used during the draft and editing steps of the writing process. Please check ClassDojo class story for a little skit we watched about learning from making mistakes. I reminded the children that I am not looking for perfect, I am expecting learning and progress.
" A little blue songbird longs to sing like her sisters. But whenever she tries, she cannot get the tune right. Her mother encourages her to leave home and find a song that only she can sing.
With courage and tenacity, she travels the world, seeking advice from a crane, an owl, and a mean-looking crow, and other birds, hoping they will lead her to her special song.
Told in gentle, lyrical prose and with bright, beautiful watercolor illustrations, The Blue Songbird is an empowering story for kids of all shapes, sizes, and singing ability." Running Press Review.
On Friday we celebrated with a small party for all the September Birthdays in both 1st Grades. Thank you to the birthday children's parents for providing food and drinks.
