Another short week for us but it was great to meet everyone informally at the school picnic and formally for your PTC's. If you still have any questions that may have come up in your conference, please feel free to contact me. We managed to get through a lot of work this week, so have a look at what we've covered. I even managed to sneak up to Ms Erin's music class and take a couple of photos of the kids with their pianicas! We had our assessment for our addition to 10 unit and am please to report that ALL of the students scored incredibly well! That was very heartening to see because we have started the next unit on subtraction and it can be a little tricky for students to get their heads around. This week we really concentrated on using the unifix cubes to make number sentences and number bonds. One skill that was particularly troublesome was identifying the whole number and then the part that will be taken away. This will continue into next week where we will also be looking into counting back (the opposite of counting on) as a strategy to solve problems. This week in writing we began our unit on narrative writing (also called recounts in Australia.) We looked how a narrative paragraph differs slightly form the paragraph we wrote for the PTCs such as using sequencing words, the past tense and capital letters for names of people and places. We started to prewrite and draft our paragraphs and we will continue into next week where we hop to complete our first narrative paragraph of the year! G1 started a mini unit on poetry this week! We looked at sensory poems, which use our 5 senses as a the basis, and analysed them. We even got around to writing some our own and used descriptive language to help people guess the subject of our writing. Our work is hanging in the common area on the third floor and G3B has been trying to solve it! We finished our science unit on sound and light this week. We looked at how shadows are made and explored different light sources inside the school and outside in the park. We even managed to work in some art to our topic and made shadow art. Our art is now hanging outside our classroom so feel free to drop in and see for yourself. We are finishing science for now and will be starting our new social studies unit next week. Lili! She took home a couple of pretty sweet erasers!
