Only three days of school this week and it was really nice having the campus all to ourselves. I heard a lot of people managed to get to the snow over the short break and this will help them for the upcoming show and tell which is all about extreme weather conditions they have been in (storms, snow, heat etc.) We continued our work on measurement this week and looked at measuring in units, both formal and informal. We covered measuring things in centimetres and metres as well as how to use a ruler correctly (something Mr Yoon from G2 asked us to practice.) We then moved onto choosing the most appropriate unit to use when measuring different objects, so centimetres for smaller objects and metres for larger ones. We even looked at using informal units such as ourselves to measure how long/tall certain animals were! We will conclude this unit next week and then move on to work with graphs and charts. We only had two writing lessons this week so we started planning and drafting our new persuasive writing texts. The subject was, 'Which book should G1 read every year?' and the students came up with a lot of good examples and reasons why they thought this book was important. We also looked at providing examples and evidence to back up our arguments using the sentence starters, 'For example, _______' Most students finished their first draft and we will be taking a break from persuasive texts to get ready for the poetry jam in two weeks time. We continued our work with our reading strategies this week and we specifically looked at stretching words outs from the beginning to the end (a key skill as some students will read the beginning of a word and guess the end) and chunking words into smaller more manageable pieces. To help demonstrate how to use these skills, we looked at the wonderful imaginary words from, 'The BFG' by Roald Dahl. The students looked at words such as , 'fibster', 'snozzcumber' and 'whizzbanger' and broke them into 2 or 3 chunks and then stretched out the sounds to read them! Because the words were all made up, they couldn't use their previous knowledge of vocabulary and had to concentrate on reading the words correctly. We finished our unit on Air and Weather this week. We managed to go outside and test the wind socks that we made and measure the wind direction and speed. We also had our last assessment and reflection for the unit. I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm that the students have displayed learning about different weather conditions and we will be continuing to record the weather throughout the rest of the year on our weather wall. The students should have brought their wind socks back home and they may ask you to hang them outside so that they can see the wind speed at home. They are made of paper though so perhaps it is not a good idea to keep them outside all the time in case it rains! This week Sayu won the the prize draw and she chose to bring in a toy to school for 1 day (as long as she's responsible for it!) Niko won Ms Lindsey's prize for a clean locker and good manners! Well done to both of them!
