ELA
Spelling
Our weekly words were verbs in the present ("ing") form. All the words contained previously learnt vowel combinations.
Reading
We started on our new unit looking at non fiction books. Children helped to sort our non fiction from fiction books. We also learnt that the text features of non fiction books help us locate information. The features that we explored this week were Table of Contents, Headings, Keywords, Glossary, Index and Captions.
Writing
Students wrote their goals for Term 3 and also went through the writing process to write about Spring Break.
Grammar
We looked at the difference between common nouns (park) and proper nouns (Yoyogi Park) and students drew and labelled the members of their family making sure to use capital letters for these proper nouns.
This week we learnt how to count to 40 using groups of 10 and then count on the ones, how to write the numbers and words to 40, place value charts with tens and ones, compare and order and number patterns.
We began our next Science unit; Animals. We will look at what animals need to survive and how to classify animals. Students drew pictures of their favourite animal and started thinking about where these animals live and what they eat.
Before Spring Break students finished their Family Traditions posters and had the opportunity to present them to the class this week. I hope you had a chance to read them when you came in for PTC's.
This week's Mystery Reader was Harper's(G1A) mother, Emily. She read us Extra Yarn by Marc Barnett and Amos McGee has a Sick Day by Phillip Stead. Both books had messages of love and kindness.
