The highlight of this week was our Social Studies presentation of Korean culture by Zion and Harrison's mothers. Each child tried on the traditional celebratory dress of Korea, the hanbok. They also played a traditional Korean ball game where they had to kick a small pom pom like disc as many times as they could. To finish everyone had a special snack and drink to celebrate sharing our cultures which is the topic of our current Social Studies unit. In ELA we have been working on our poems. Children are bringing home the poems they wrote themselves to practice. Next week in class we will have a mini Poetry Slam to choose the person who will represent grade 1a in the school wide poetry slam. We are also presenting an excerpt from the Amy Schwartz poem, 100 Things That Make Me Happy. We also started looking at non-fiction books in reading. For Show and Tell students shared their own non-fiction books from home. We finished our unit on length in Math and will be starting on weight next week. In Science we did an experiment to find out if plants grow better in fresh or salt water.
